L’Antonina dal 1890 boasts an experience and a tradition of prestige and can be considered, with 125 years of history, one of the most ancient Italian auction house in business today.
Management relies on the expertise of the brothers Romiti, whose family beginnings, more than a century ago, the auction business under the name “Gallery Iandolo”, managed by Ugo de Villacinta Iandolo, great-uncle of Romiti. For the competence and passion of Mr. Iandolo, the Gallery, which was located in the Palace of Pope Pius V, at the corner of Via Flaminia and Piazzale delle Belle Arti, soon became one of the most important for the sale of art objects, counting in its prestigious clientele the most important names of roman and Italian aristocracy.
In 1930, the Gallery was transformed in auction house under the name of “L’Antonina” and moved the seat to Piazza di Spagna. The new entity, born from the collaboration between Alfredo Silvestri (well known expert in the antiquary environment not only roman) and Romolo Romiti (who had married the sister of Ugo Iandolo) took itas name from the particular religious devotion that the two owners had for Sant’Antonio da Padova.
When Romiti died, L’Antonina passed to the children Fabrizio and Antonio, the latter important art expert, tied for friendship to the largest Roman noble families and the world’s most important scientific and historical-artistic names (Brandi, Venturi, Argan, Zeri).
In those years, the auction house with its usual professionalism keeps its activity of collecting and selling art objects, consolidating fame and prestige also outside Italy. After the death of Fabrizio are substitutes, in succession, the sons Giampiero, Massimo and Andrea Romiti, who collaborated with Antonio until 1985 and took over the entire company. Since 1999 entered in the share capital, contributing to the new course of the auction house and bringing new life to the historical tradition.
